In many ways, summers in Georgia are an oddity. Whether you’ve been on the beach, the golf course, or somewhere in between sometimes it feels like the humidity is all around you. And yet, even though we’re still in the midst of the heat of summer, we are in the midst of “back to school” season. The sales on classroom supplies are going on all around us, and the children are all getting ready to go back to school, perhaps with a mix of excitement and dread.
One of the schools right in our backyard, Chesnut Charter Elementary School, turns 50 this year. And construction crews are working on building a new Austin Elementary School. Anniversaries and new beginnings add to the excitement of the school year. And as we celebrate with our children and parents going back to school, we’re doing a little celebrating of our own — Kingswood also turns 50 this year.
What a huge milestone this is! The community around us has grown up — literally — around us. And just like some of the schools going through building or refresh projects, we’ve been doing a little sprucing up ourselves. We hope that as you visit, you’ll notice the visible changes — like the refinished parking lot, the new carpeting, new chairs and refinished pews. It can be great fun to improve the church as part of a major milestone!
It’s also a time for us to go back to basics…back to our Foundations, which is the theme of our 50th anniversary. We have such strong foundations here at the corner of Tilly Mill and North Peachtree. They are foundations of brick and mortar, but also foundations of the Holy Spirit, who by God’s grace has been working in and through this congregation for 50 years. In early September, we’ll have a chance to celebrate our anniversary with a day-long celebration. But as we go back to our foundations, let’s think about these cornerstones of ministry that have set us up not only for the years behind us, but also for the years ahead:
- Building community
- Making disciples
- Serving in ministry
- Sharing the good news
I look forward to seeing what the next years will bring at Kingswood. Our history is still being written, and if we keep the focus on these foundations, then by God’s grace the next 50 years will be even better.
Grace and peace,
Rev. Charles Broome
