John Bever
Achieves Eagle Scout Rank
|
Dunwoody, GA (September 2, 2005)
Boy Scout Troop 477, chartered to Kingswood
United Methodist Church, is pleased to announce that John Bever has achieved
the rank of Eagle Scout at an Eagle Board of Review conducted on August 14th. He is one of only 68 Eagle Scouts from Troop 477
since it was first chartered in 1972. Only three percent of boys who enter
scouting are in this distinctive rank.
John’s Eagle service project was the design
and construction of erosion controls for two trails at the Dunwoody Nature
Center. Teens and adults from Troop 477, from Dunwoody United Methodist
Church, and from Wesleyan School worked three days laying railroad ties and
mulch on the trails, and building a ramp down a foot bridge. Participants
spent 300 hours on the project. Ms. Claire Hayes, Executive Director of the
Nature Center, provided guidance and supervision, and Mr. Charlie Cochrane
from the Big Trees Forest Preserve in Sandy Springs assisted in the design
of the project. With the assistance of the scouts and adults of Troop 477,
John raised nearly $400 for the project by holding a car wash at the Burger
King in Dunwoody.
John has served as Senior Patrol Leader,
Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide. John’s favorite experience in scouting was
backpacking 70 miles over 12 days with 18 other scouts and adults from his
Troop at Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, New Mexico in 2003, where
he served as one of the two crew chiefs. John also enjoyed the challenge
backpacking for a week this summer with 19 scouts and adult leaders from the
Troop at the Double H Ranch High Adventure Base in New Mexico, serving as
navigator.
John is a senior at Wesleyan School, where
he is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society,
co-captain of the Varsity Wrestling team, student government officer, and
participant on a mission trip to Jamaica this year. John is a member of
Dunwoody United Methodist Church, is active in its’ Youth Program, and
participated in last year’s mission trip to Brazil.
John will be recognized at an Eagle Scout
Court of Honor this Fall.
